Are You in the Sandwich Generation Without Even Knowing It?

If you’re in your 40s, 50s, or 60s, there’s a good chance you’re being pulled in more directions than you realize — by your career, your kids, and your aging parents, all at once. Here’s what that really means for your financial future.

You Might Already Be in the Sandwich Generation

Many people aren’t even aware that they’re in it yet. The sandwich generation — those of us in our 40s, 50s, and 60s — are managing our careers, our financial situations, and at some point may simultaneously have the responsibility of assisting both their parents and their adult children. And unfortunately, there are times when these different parts of your world come into direct conflict.

The Hidden Cost of Saying Yes to Everyone

Every time a situation requires your attention — whether it’s for an adult child or an aging parent — you’re going to sacrifice some of your time. And it’s not trivial when it’s not a one-off. It adds up.

When Your Heart and Your Finances Pull in Opposite Directions

Take a common example on the brighter side of things: an adult child comes to you with an opportunity — they want to go into business, or they want to buy a house. Your emotions immediately say, I want to help my kid, I’ll do anything for my kid. So you rationalize, separate some dollars from an account, and help them — without really understanding the impact on yourself.

If you give that child $100,000 today and you’re 55 or 60 years old, you’re not just giving them $100,000. What that money would do for you over the next 30 years is rather significant.

When the Other Side of the Sandwich Gets Heavy

And then there’s the other side — one that many of us, myself included, have had deep personal experience with. When your parents can no longer fully take care of themselves, your priorities immediately have to change. And that’s when life becomes truly challenging.

Being sandwiched between generations is one of the most emotionally and financially complex situations a person can face. Having a plan before the pressure hits can make all the difference.
